THE YARDARM MEANING- People say the sun is over the yardarm to say that it is late enough in the day to have an alcoholic drink. … Note: This expression is thought to come from the old practice on some ships of having an alcoholic drink when the sun had risen past a horizontal bar on the mast, usually around 11am

Travel on the Staffordshire and Worcester canal, through the water fronts of Birmingham via the main line, onto the Birmingham and Fazeley and the Trent and Mersey. The route is a varied mix of urban and countryside and offers family activities along the way. Birmingham has its shopping, restaurants and art galleries, plus the sea life centre and museums for the children. Visit the black country museum and live the story of the Black country. There is also Dudley zoo and castle, Drayton Manor Park and Shugborough Hall which are perfect for a family day out.
FOUR COUNTIES RING
7 NIGHTS 92 LOCKS 56 HOURS – 9HRS CRUISING TIME PER DAY
This route takes you along the wonderfully rural Staffordshire and Worcetershire canal to Great Haywood junction. Passing under the Trent and Mersey Canal heading north towards the potteries and Peak district. Rolling Staffordshire countryside leads you to Stoke-on-Trent, the Wedgewood Visitor centre and the impressive 2926-yard long Harecastle tunnel. The scenery on the climb up ‘Heartbreak Hill@ to the summit at Kidsgrove is fantastic. Beyond Harecastle the 13 miles to the salt town of Middlewich sees the canal descend 31 locks to the Cheshire Plains. The short Middlewich arm links the Trent and Mersey canal to the Shropshire union canal again through more glorious countryside. Be sure no to miss the Bottle kilns of Etruria.

LLANGOLLEN & RETURN
14 NIGHTS 100 LOCKS 94 HOURS 7hrs CRUISING TIME PER DAY

Please note the above are a guide only and does not take into account the duration each day you wish to travel especially if wishing to make stops at some of the beautiful attractions and sites our beautiful canals have to offer on route. We would advise planning your route from Gailey Lock, Lock 32 on the Staffordshire and Worcester canal using the RCR canal route planner www.rivercanalrescue.co.uk. For more leisurely cruising on some of the further routes we may advise extending your break to 14 nights.
Maps and guide books will be available to purchase from Reception on your departure days
